Insulation for Flat Roofs
Just like the advancement of the old drafty, wooden windows to A-rated double glazed systems; flat roofs have advanced somewhat also in the last few decades.
In the early days of cheap decking covered with felt, there used to be troubles with terrible heat loss. Early remedies were to pack loft insulation in between the joists, however this often caused moisture to form.
If that flat roof is in a living area, great thought and attention should be given to ensure it is designed as a 'warm roof' system.
New builds and extentions must comply with the new building regulations. Such regulations do not permit insulation to be installed between joists, but should be installed on top of the actual decking.
The best method is to install a Vapour Proof Barrier over the decking, laying the insulation slabs over the top. The thickness of the insulation should be a minimum of 100mm, however the required depth can depend on many factors.
Once the decking and insulation has been securely fastened to the roofing timbers, it is then water-proofed in our one-piece rubber system, or by using our alternative quality glass fibre system.
Another benefit of having a 'warm roof' system is that it will stay cool in the summer.
